Farmers are protesting against the new Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) and MSP laws.  that a lot of the urban audience doesn’t really understand.

What is the Three farm bill?  (Indian Farm Reforms 2020)

Back in September: – The government passed three laws in the  Parliament, which Are farmer-produced trade commerce laws, farmer’s agreement price assurance, and amendments to essential commodities.

In simple language:-  these laws allow farmers to sell directly to the private sector outside of the government-controlled mandi, the government-controlled mandi is called Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC)s. they also allow for the private sector to enter into contracts with farmers and sort of place an order on what they want the farmers to grow. so that they can buy it when the farmer will grow up the crop.

They also remove all of the regulations on hoarding so the private sector is now allowed to drop the price they could manipulate now.

The government says that they will use these joint regulations to free the farmer, so that the farmer can be free from the monopoly of his own corruption and allow the farmer to enter the open market and whatever the price is privately Wanted from the area.

Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC)s state government-regulated markets or mandi and only licensed traders can actually buy in the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC). now the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) physically requires the farmer to bring his products to the market that was a problem because a lot of times farmers couldn’t afford to bring them.

There are only 6 thousand Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC)s mandi in India. This is a bit low and that’s not enough to cover all-state. so farmers who couldn’t afford to go to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) mandi. they sell it directly to traders at whatever price that they could get.

The government argues that the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) system is flawed and the only way to fix it is to allow the farmers to direct taxes to the private sector to allow the private sector to set up similar mandi across the country.

Why farmers are protesting against the new bills? Farmer Protest-

The private sector starts to set up Mandi which doesn’t have to pay the cash or the tax to the government. And they don’t have to pay their dues to the state government over a period of time. the private sector Mandi will wipe out the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC)s because of competition and if the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC)s get wiped out then the farmers will effectively be left only at the mercy of the private sector and the private sector will then begin to drive down prices and the farmers will have no option they’ll have nowhere else to go.

MSP (Minimum Support Price)

MSP is offered for crops like rice and wheat and mainly staple crops. Now when a farmer has a bumper crop and there’s he has a huge harvest and he brings it to the market and there’s a glut of that same process because everybody’s had a bumper crop at that time and there’s a lot of wheat coming to the market the price of wheat will come down and the farmer will not recover what he has invested into that crop.

What is MSP (Minimum Support Price)?

What the MSP? does is that the government offers a minimum price at which the government itself will buy and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) offers that price now farmers argue that if the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC)s are weakened by this law over a period of time and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) is shut down the MSP will go with them because technically a private sector Mandi is under no obligation to offer the MSP and so there’s no guarantee in the new law of the MSP.

First accusation was that these farmers are being misled by the opposition. when the farmers have made a point by point presentation to the central government on their main concerns with these laws and the government has heard them out and acknowledge those concerns which should sort of make.

Second accusation was that the farm protest is actually a Khalistani. separatist movement many of these farmers came out and made statements in the media saying that they have children in the armed forces they’re not anti-national.

Why are most of them from Punjab?

The real reason is that Punjab farmers grow mostly wheat and rice(PDF).  most of the wheat and rice is grown in Punjab and these are MSP crops. so they actually benefit the most from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) system they benefit the most from the MSP system and they stand to lose the most if either the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) or the MSP system.
